Electric Fields II: Acceleration and Deflection of Electrons

Common area

  • Magnets (can be used to divert the beam if there is a dead spot on the CRT screen)
  • “Exposed” CRT, if available (can be used to show the inside workings, especially the deflection plates)
  • Extra spare parts, especially the following:
    • Multimeters
    • CRT
    • 24 V power supply
    • 500 V power supply

Individual station

  • CRT (w/ stuck-on ruler)
  • C-clamp
  • 24 V power supply
  • 500 V power supply
  • 2 Multimeters
  • 7 banana patch cables (4 black, 3 red)

Setup notes

  • Wire-up and check each CRT to ensure it is working correctly.
  • Adjust beam spot size (using potentiometer knob in the back) if beam spot is distorted or too large.
  • If necessary, clean the goop off the front of the CRT screen and re-attach cut rulers.
