Two seemingly identical closed boxes each have a small hole in one side that appear equally black. When their lids are removed it is revealed that one of the boxes is painted black on the inside but the other is painted white.

A large incandescent lamp approximates a blackbody radiator. Students use hand-held transmission gratings to view the visible part of the blackbody spectrum as the power to the lamp is varied.
