Starting Up

Letting Rb Cell temp equillibrate is important to getting a stable signal from the PD. Can take up to 20 min.

Start by turning Horizontal and vertical fields all the way down.

Sweep at 1s.

First thing is to adjust sweep field and recorder offset to obtain full +/- 14V sweep amplitude to ensure starting with largest possible range. I was able to get +/- 14.2V

It takes a while (~1/2 an hour) for the temperature control to fully stabilize. It also tends to overshoot at first.

To chase the high frequency splitting, you'll need an external power supply. The BK precision 1601 (long flat ones) will do the job just fine, set to around 20V. You can always turn the voltage down until the ERROR LED on the optical pumping console lights up and then nudge it upwards.${/download/attachments/275156712/RFSweep.png?version=1&modificationDate=1624551886000&api=v2…

Optical Pumping (PHYS 334)

Optical pumping is an experimental technique by which specially prepared photons are used to repeatedly excite an ensemble of Rb atoms in a way which drives the atoms into a specific atomic energy state from which the atom can no longer be excited by the photons. Once you learn how the technique works and how to apply it to Rb atoms in a vapor cell you will use it as a tool to make measurements of the energy of the Zeeman splitting as a function of magnetic field.
